Domain registration for coffee beans
When starting a new business online, there is nothing more fundamental than the
registration of a domain name. For a business involved in selling coffee beans and other coffee related
products, a coffee related domain and business name would be advised to allow for easier customer
recognition. The Internet is a huge directory of individual and business websites - all of whom want to catch
the public eye. By having a relevant domain name that is catchy and easily identifiable with your business
function, it is much easier to be noticed and recognised by your target market. In order to understand why it
is important to register a good domain name, it is necessary to know the basics of the domain name system
(DNS) and its role on the Internet.
The DNS is a hierarchical system of naming computers and other resources online, associating the
digital information on a web page with a particular domain name. The DNS translates a written domain name that is
recognisable and memorable to people into a numerical number that is used for locating the page online. Because
people register the written name and have nothing to do with the numerical data, it is possible to assign domain
names to particular businesses that are relevant and meaningful to both the businesses themselves and their users.
However, because the Internet has been around for a while now, and there has been virtually no restrictions in the
way that people can register domains, there is a lot of competition for memorable and industry related domain
names.
The Domain Name System uses authoritative name servers to map names to the IP addresses of
computers. Mapping takes place through the analysis of the different parts of a domain name, of which there are
normally at least three. The right most label - such as com, net or org, designates the top-level domain. Each
label to the left of this top-level designates a subdomain, of which there is always at least one identifier and
often more - separated by dots. The left label - www (world wide web) - generally refers to the particular www
Internet protocol, although a host name can also be listed without the www. The most confusing part of this
labeling for a new business is often with choosing the top-level domain, as domains can be registered with any or
all of the available possibilities. This situation is confused even more as many countries also impose a system of
national specific second-level domains, such as - .co.uk or .org.uk.
The right to register domain names for individual websites falls under the accreditation of
the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Accredited domain name registrars maintain a
database of registered names for an annual fee, and often provide administrative and technical support, and
sometimes website hosting as well. For a coffee business involved with selling coffee grinder and related products, it may be difficult registering a short and memorable
coffee related domain name with .com as the top-level. The rise of the Internet and e-commerce in particular has
seen .com domains valued more than the other top-level options, as they have a larger degree of recognition in
the Internet using public. A coffee business would have to weigh up the issues relating to memorability,
availability and relevancy when choosing a domain name for its operation.
